Put a seed in the ground and keep it alive — the four needs, seeds vs transplants, depth, spacing, watering.

A plant wants to grow. That is the thing beginners forget — you are not forcing anything, you are simply not getting in its way. A seed already contains the entire plan for the plant it will become: the roots, the leaves, the flowers, the fruit, the next generation of seeds. Your whole job is to supply the conditions that seed is waiting for, and then to keep those conditions steady while it does the work. Get a small number of things right and growing stops being mysterious. This lesson covers all of them.

The four things every plant needs

Strip away every product, gadget, and piece of jargon, and a vegetable needs exactly four things. Almost every problem you will ever have — pale plants, no fruit, sudden death, bitter leaves — traces back to one of these four being wrong. Learn them in your bones and you can diagnose most trouble yourself.

1. Light — the engine

Leaves are solar panels. Through photosynthesis, a plant turns sunlight, water, and air into the sugars it grows on, so light is not a nicety — it is the fuel supply. Vegetables are divided by how much they need. "Full sun" means six or more hours of direct sunlight a day; "part shade" means roughly three to six. The hungriest crops are the ones that make fruit — tomatoes, peppers, squash, beans — because building fruit takes enormous energy. Leafy crops — lettuce, spinach, kale, chard — are far more forgiving and will give you a decent harvest on four or five hours, sometimes appreciating afternoon shade in hot weather. Root crops sit in between.

The classic symptom of too little light is a plant that grows tall, thin, and pale, stretching toward the nearest window or gap in the canopy. It is reaching. Move it, or choose a leafier crop for that spot.

2. Water — the delivery system

Water does two jobs: it keeps the plant's cells firm (a wilting plant is literally losing pressure), and it is the truck that carries dissolved nutrients up from the roots into the plant. What a plant wants is steady, even moisture — not a swamp, not a desert, and above all not a wild swing between the two. Inconsistent watering is behind a surprising number of problems: tomatoes that crack or rot at the bottom, greens that turn bitter and bolt, split roots. We will cover the how in depth below, because watering is the single skill beginners most often get wrong.

3. Warmth — the permission slip

Every plant has a temperature range it will tolerate and a narrower one in which it thrives, and this is where more beginners stumble than almost anywhere else. Crops fall into two camps:

Note that soil temperature matters as much as air temperature. Seeds sown in cold soil often rot before they sprout. This is why a warm-season seed planted "on time" by the calendar but into still-cold spring soil frequently just fails.

4. Room — space above and below

Roots need room to spread for water and nutrients, and leaves need room for air to move between them. Crowd plants together and three things happen: they compete and all stay stunted, the still damp air trapped between them becomes a nursery for fungal disease, and you make the whole bed harder to tend. Proper spacing feels wasteful when you are looking at tiny seedlings — it is not. We will turn spacing into a simple system below.

The diagnostic habit

When something looks wrong, run the four needs before anything else. Too little light? Too much or too little water? Wrong temperature for this crop? Too crowded? Four questions will explain the large majority of problems a beginner meets — long before you need to think about pests or disease.

Your season is the clock everything runs on

Before you plant a single seed, you need to know your growing season — the stretch of frost-free days between your last frost in spring and your first frost in fall. This number governs everything: what you can grow, whether you sow it outside or start it indoors, and when. A crop that needs more days than your season offers will simply never finish.

Two numbers do the work. Days to maturity is printed on every seed packet — the rough number of days from planting to harvest. Your frost-free window is local. Set one against the other and the plan writes itself.

Northwest Montana is a short, cool season: last frost around June 7, first frost by mid-September — roughly 100 frost-free days, with cold nights even in summer. That single fact reshapes the whole plan. Cool crops (peas, spinach, carrots, beets, lettuce, the cabbage family) thrive and go straight into the ground in late April. Warm crops with short maturities (bush beans, fast tomatoes) work if you help them. Long-season heat lovers — full-size tomatoes started late, peppers, eggplant, melons, winter squash, corn — are marginal or simply won't finish, which is why the catalog marks each plant for this region. The shorter your season, the more this clock dictates your choices.

Seeds vs. transplants

There are two ways to begin a plant: sow a seed directly where it will grow, or set out a transplant — a young seedling you started indoors or bought. Choosing between them is mostly the season math, plus the nature of the crop.

Direct-sow the crops that grow fast enough to finish in place, and especially those that resent having their roots disturbed — root crops like carrots, beets, radishes, and turnips form a taproot that transplanting damages, so they should almost always go straight into the ground. Beans and peas also grow quickly and dislike the disruption. So do leafy greens, which are quick from seed.

Start indoors and transplant the slow, warm-season crops whose maturity is longer than your outdoor warm window allows — tomatoes, peppers, and the cabbage family are the classics. You give them a head start under controlled conditions weeks before it is safe to plant outside, so that when the weather finally turns they are already strong young plants with a running start on the season.

Here is the math made concrete. A tomato might list 65 "days to maturity" — but that count starts from transplant, not from seed, and the plant needs six to eight weeks of indoor growth before that. In a 100-day season you cannot sow a tomato seed outdoors in June and expect ripe fruit. You start it indoors in early April, harden it off, transplant it after your last frost, and it ripens in late summer. Run that calculation for any long-season crop: count backward from your last frost date to know when to start seeds indoors.

You can also simply buy transplants from a nursery, which skips the indoor-growing step entirely and is the easiest path for a beginner. Growing your own gives you far more variety and is cheaper at scale, but there is no shame in buying healthy starts your first season.

Starting seeds indoors

If your season pushes you to start seeds inside, a few specifics make the difference between sturdy seedlings and a windowsill full of disappointment.

Reading a seed packet

The packet is a complete instruction card, and four pieces of it carry almost all the value:

Most packets also tell you when to plant relative to your last frost ("sow 2 weeks before last frost" or "start indoors 6–8 weeks before last frost") and whether to thin. The more exotic-sounding notes you can safely ignore as a beginner. Depth, spacing, timing, sun — that is the working core.

How deep, how far apart

Depth. The rule of thumb is to plant a seed about two to three times as deep as the seed is wide. Big seeds like beans go down about an inch; tiny seeds like lettuce or carrots need only a light dusting of soil. Planting too deep is the more common mistake — a small seed buried too far exhausts its stored energy before its shoot ever reaches the light, and never comes up. A few seeds (some lettuces, for instance) actually need light to germinate and should barely be covered at all; the packet will say so.

The logic is just the plant's mature footprint: a full-grown tomato fills a whole square, while sixteen carrots stand comfortably in the same space because each is slim. When you sow more thickly than this (you usually will, to insure against seeds that don't sprout), you thin down to these numbers once they are up.

Watering, properly

More plants are killed by careless watering than by anything else, and the trap is that both too little and too much produce a wilting plant — so beginners often respond to an overwatered, suffocating plant by giving it still more water. A handful of habits remove the guesswork entirely:

The exception is seeds and tiny seedlings. They have no deep roots yet, so the rule flips: keep the top of the soil consistently moist with gentle, frequent watering until they are established — never letting a sprouting seedbed dry out, but never making it soggy either.

Consistency is the quiet secret. Steady moisture prevents a whole list of disorders that come from stress and swings: blossom-end rot on tomatoes (a calcium-uptake problem driven by erratic water), cracked tomatoes and split roots (from a heavy drink after a dry spell), and bitter, bolting greens. A layer of mulch — straw or leaves over the soil — buffers all of this by holding moisture even and steady, and is especially worth it in a dry climate.

Transplanting without shock

Moving a seedling — whether one you grew or one you bought — is a stressful event for the plant, and two steps keep it from setting the plant back or killing it.

First, hardening off. A seedling raised indoors or in a greenhouse has never felt wind, direct sun, or cold. Planted straight out, the shock can stunt or kill it. Instead, over about a week, set it outside for a few hours the first day in a sheltered, partly shaded spot, then a little longer and in a little more sun and weather each day, before it moves out for good. It is the step beginners skip and then cannot explain why their transplants struggled. Skipping it is like sending someone who has lived indoors all winter out for a full day in the summer sun with no warning.

Second, the transplanting itself. Choose an overcast day or the evening, so the plant isn't hit with full sun while it recovers. Disturb the roots as little as you can, set the plant at the same depth it grew (tomatoes are the famous exception — they can be planted deeper, and will root along the buried stem), firm the soil gently around it, and water it in right away to settle the soil against the roots. Give it a day or two of grace before you expect it to perk up.

The first weeks, and what can go wrong

Once things are in the ground, most of the work is watching — but watching with informed eyes. Here is what to expect and the early problems to recognize.

Keeping a square working all season

A square that has finished one crop doesn't have to sit empty. Succession planting — replanting a square as soon as it is harvested, and staggering sowings of quick crops a couple of weeks apart — keeps a small space productive from spring through fall and gives you a steady trickle of harvest instead of a single glut.

In practice: sow a square of radishes or lettuce, and two weeks later sow another, so they mature in sequence rather than all at once. When an early cool crop like spinach finishes in summer, replace it with a fresh sowing of something heat-tolerant, then with a fall crop as the weather cools again. In a short season this takes planning — you are always thinking one crop ahead — but it is how a handful of squares feeds you far beyond what their size suggests.

Your first square, step by step

Don't begin with a tomato. Begin with a radish or leaf lettuce — fast, forgiving, and genuinely satisfying. Here is the entire loop:

  1. Pick a sunny square. Six-plus hours of sun is ideal; lettuce will accept a little less.
  2. Sow at the right depth and spacing. Radishes: a light covering, aiming for sixteen in the square. Lettuce: barely covered, four in the square.
  3. Keep the surface moist. Check daily and water gently so the seedbed never dries out. Radishes germinate in days.
  4. Thin once they're up. When seedlings are an inch tall, snip the extras to leave your spacing.
  5. Switch to the finger test. From then on, water deeply when the top inch is dry.
  6. Harvest. Radishes are ready in three to four weeks; pick lettuce leaves as you need them. That's a full cycle — seed to plate — in about a month.

Run that loop once and the whole craft stops being abstract. Then do it again with something a little more ambitious. That is genuinely how every grower learns: one square, one cycle at a time.
